Need help swapping out headunit on my Eos...

Postby jaybhai » Wed Nov 22, 2006 10:17 pm

I want to swap out my nav unit with a in-dash 6-disc unit and remove my center console cd changer. I am pretty sure I will be able to take the main unit out, but I think I need a special tool to remove the cd changer.

I'm a total VW newbie (the Eos is my first VW)...and wanted to ask if anyone in the SF Bay Area (preferably near Santa Clara) is willing to help me. Shoot me a private message or email me.

I couldn't make the recent GTG, but plan to make the next one to meet some folks in the area. Thanks in advance.

I have a full Euro head unit key set but I'm in Sac, may be a bit before I can get it to you to borrow.

If the dash and center console are anything like my '06 Jetta GLI then you will need a good set of instructions to take it apart and a set of Torx wrenches.

So I'm assuming you don't have the tool I need? Seriously, I just need that 3 spoke stereo removal tool for like 5 minutes. I'm willing to drive anywhere in the Bay to get this done... let me know.

If I don't hear from anyone by mid-week, I'm gonna try to see if the VW service center can loan me one..

you can also try any car audio install place. if you are nice to them, they might go out to your car with you and do it for you... for free maybe :drink:

Sorry to hijack, but I want the 6 CD in dash player as well. I'm assuming you're talking about the OEM one. Where did you get yours/where do you plan to get it? I haven't had the easiest time finding one

I actually found someone that was looking for a OEM Nav at vwvortex.com and contacted him about a swap. He offered his Passat B6 in-dash 6-disc + cash for my Eos Nav + center console CD changer. There are some units on eBay, but most of them appear to be European models, which will most likely work with some VAG-COM help or other types of hacking.

I was able to successfully swap the units (and Sat, AM/FM, CD w/ MP3 in-das, and center console CD changer work great!), but now I have the GPS antenna loose behind the unit and what appears to be the AUX input from the glove box with nowhere to plug it in. So I lose that until I find a pass-through solution with the Sat connector. Once I take the center console cd changer out, I will also have that connection open for a center console Ipod or USB adapter.

So if you are interesting in doing that kind of swap, it will work. Good luck finding a unit... I'm sure people in the forums here or vwvortex.com might be looking to sell/trade theirs. I think any mk5 car unit will work (I don't know the exact Blaupunkt model number), but it shouldn't be too hard to find if everyone has one in their cars.

Too bad I don't have OEM navi. Oh, wait... even if I did, I probably would trade it for a CD changer :)

Thanks for the info, I just really get tired of seeing all that space wasted by a tape player. I don't even own tapes nemore

Tapes with music, no, but tape adapters yes.

I used a tape adapter with my Minidisc player, and am now using it with my XM tuner. I'd rather go thru the hassle of a tape adapter than taking out the stock deck, using a harness, spending for another XM enabled head unit, only to have XM only in one car. With a external tuner, the XM goes with me in any car, and I also have the nifty boombox that you can set up at home. :thumb:

So, yes, I'm glad some stereos still have tape decks. Broadcasting XM thru the FM may work, but the sound quality suffers.

Do the Mk5s come with tape decks or CD/MP3 only?

No tape decks as far as I know. 6-disk in-dash CD/MP3 in my car.
