Advice on size of rims

Postby MARFY » Tue Apr 10, 2007 11:03 am

Hello im kind of new to the forums
But i would like to new what size rims would fit my 1994 Golf III four door. Im thinking of going with 18 inch. Aso im thinking of getting a chip for my car does that make any difference so far all i got is the ABD big bore intake
But i am planning on getting Chip, Exahust, Short shifter kit and not sure what else to get just want the best out of my little 2.0 Golf any info would be great. I also seen some pix's of a couple of you guys going on a cruz around the bay someday i would like to be part of that that would be great
Thanks Very Much for any advice :)

Yup yup! And a few of us San Jose people are tonna try to get together soon to take pics n whatever else, so your welcome to come.

The shortshifter would be a good choice, as would an exhaust. Though the exhaust wont give any power to the 2.0, it will give it a much deeper gorwling sound. It sounds niiiiiice. If them make them for MK3's, get the BFI Dogbone Inserts. Im having mine put on later.

Welp, for one thing, 18" wheels on a Mk3 would be huge, not to mention it would probably slow down your car, being it's a 2.0. A good rule I've been told, and I follow (most of the time) is to go +2 whatever the stock size of your wheels.

So, if you had 14s, max out at 16s, 15s ==> 17s, etc. 18s might be good for looks, but on a mk3 they may look too big. Just a recommendation, it's your car :thumb:

No my car is not lowered yet im going to get the adjustable coilovers. The look im looking for is i want the fender to be about 1 inch from the tire. So probably 16 inch would be best im guessing

The diameter of the wheel and tire package is the same regardless if you run 16 or 17" wheels. That's because the tire sidewall is reduced to compensate for the larger diameter wheel. If you get a wheel with the correct offset and width you can get a 17" wheel to fit with out any rubbing at all. Same goes if you go with 18", though, on a Mk III I personally would not go more than 16" because you lose more and more sidewall as you go larger with the rim. This gives you less and less protection of the rim itself from hitting potholes and stuff.

If you PM me your email address I can send you pictures of my dearly departed Mk III Jetta with a mild drop (about 1" gap all around) on 16X7.5" BBS alloys.
