MARFY wrote:Can someone plz explain what these sizes mean 235/40/16 for tires trying to get my rims

235 = the width of the tire in millimeters
40 = aspect ratio, in other words, 40% of 235 = 94, this is the height of the sidewall of the tire
16 = rim diameter

Obviously, you cannot mount a tire intended for a 17" rim onto a 16" rim or vice versa.

This is how it works: Let's say your original wheels and tires are 14 X 6 and 185/60-14 (stock size for a 4-cylinder Mk III Golf or Jetta). Your rolling diameter is going to be 578mm ((14X25.4)+(185X.6X2)=577.6). If you want to go with a 16" wheel and a 205 tire you will find that a 205/40-16 will work for you ((16X25.4)+(205X.5X2)=570.4) while a 205/45-16 is a little larger diameter than stock (590.9). Alternatively, you can go with a 195/45-16 (581.9) or a 215/40-16 (578.4).

Granted, some of these tire sizes don't exist but you get the idea. Also, watch the tire manufacturer's recommendation for rim width because you can put too large of a tire onto too narrow of a rim and vice-versa (you've seen the stretched look, no doubt).

Pictures sent...

Anyway, I've always ran 17's on my MKIII's... My VR is pretty low and I don't have *too* many problems rubbing... Or I've gotten used to the smell of burning rubber, one of the two. :rofl: My 2.0 wasn't nearly as low and definitely never had problems there ... I've always gone w/ 205/40/17. 18's are definitely too big on a MKIII... It really depends on how you want your ride to be and visual preferences... My VR is lower than my 2.0 was, but he rides way better than she ever did... But I've also pulled out my fenders many, many times. :rolleyes:

My 2.0 RIP 11/23/05:
