Postby 00TURBO » Sun Mar 09, 2008 10:20 pm

i want to paint my rims (all chrome) black on the spokes but keep the lips chrome. how/what should i use? is there somewhere i could take it maybe? what sort of paint would keep the glossy/chrome look? how much might this cost?

so are the rims already chromes?? since you said "keep the lips chrome" the best bet would be to not "paint" over the chrome part. But to tape off anything you want to keep chrome and work from there.

If you want a true "chrome" you are going to have to take it somewhere for it to be proper if the wheels aren't already chromed, or if the chrome needs repairing. You just won't get the proper look out of a rattle can.

If they are chrome already it would be possible to do yourself.... I would suggest though, if you have to ask how to do it, you probably won't want to take matters into your own hands. Unless you are comfortable with paying someone to do it if you do mess them up.

As far as shops, a couple of the folks around here know of a shop or two so hopefully one of them will chime in with recommendations.

depends on the car for me, on a GTI, I would say black with a polished lip would be better too. Then again the chrome and black could be a nice change. I am all about trying new shit.... not to mention if he paints em black leaves the chrome and the chrome isn't working, he could always then polish the lips..... no extra work since the wheels are already chromed.

you can always do it yourself if you really want budget. i think you have to sand down the chrome before you paint it.

as it has been said, you will have to sand down the parts to be painted...... then as far as paint, it really depends on how much you want to spend and what you are willing to do.

If you are fine with spending time on prep and know how to use a rattle can, you could potentially use any rattle can paint, as well as rustoleum makes an Appliance Epoxy that truly does create a "harder" finish than other standard rattle can paints. Also the appliance epoxy is supposed to be designed to stand a little higher heat. When sprayed properly it gives a nice high gloss, even coverage..... for quick examples, I have used it on high use pieces for work, it is sprayed on the extended shifter rod on my vert, and I have used it on other surfaces with success.

I say all this with my normal input that if you have to ask, I don't suggest you doing any of this on your own. This is not because you can't do it, but not everyone has the ability to do things like this, and I am not responsible for any results that come from my advice. Different people expect different things, and any time someone does a mod like this themselves they could be extremely happy or really pissed depending on their personal experience.

If you still decide to do it I would suggest reading up a lot so you know what you are getting into in general for painting (and painting over chrome). Google searches will give you lots of info to read up on as well as the link already posted about painting wheels. Other than that...... sand properly, clean A LOT, and mask the hell out of the spots you are not painting.

i actually decided that i dont like the style of my current wheels anyway. and painting them would just make them uglyer because, well I would be the one painting them... so i'm selling them with the tires for just a few hundered bucks, meanwhile my new rims should be coming in tomorrow at americas tire co. i didnt want to spend $846237814 on BBS or anything, well, nice, so i went with some DR19s fo cheap! :thumb:
should be on tomorrow!
